Your Dog Nutrition : Best Forms of Protein

Chicken and lamb are the most common sources of protein in chihuahua dog nutrition, and they are also the most digestible. Chicken is often labeled as real chicken, deboned chicken, chicken by-products, or chicken meal.

Chicken meal is made from flesh, skin and bones that have been cleaned, dried, cooked and ground. Its water content and most fat have been removed, leaving a very concentrated source of protein (64%). It takes about 6 pounds of real chicken to make 1 pound of chicken meal.

Real chicken also includes flesh and skin without feathers or internal organs, but as a moist product its protein concentration is much lower (11%). Any ingredient panel lists the weight of ingredients before cooking. If real chicken is the first ingredient in your chi's food, make sure there is another sustaining source of protein close thereafter. Once the real chicken is cooked and freed from its water content, it may lose its spot as the real primary source of protein.

Chicken by-product meal, as per AFFCO , consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice. Although it is very high in protein (62%) and suitable for animal consumption, it is not considered a desirable source of protein by many dog nutrition experts. The diversity of its content makes it a much less digestible source of protein ( 77% vs 84% for chicken meal).

Lamb meal is also a very tasty and digestible (82%) source of protein. It was originally used as an alternative protein to help reduce itching, scratching and shedding for dogs that were allergic to chicken. It has grown into one of the most popular sources of protein along with chicken.

Beware of tricky bag claims, though! If it says lamb or lamb meal on the bag, there is definitely lamb (meal) in the bag. But it may also contain other sources of protein, such as chicken meal, fish meal, chicken by-product meal, or even corn gluten meal. This may affect your purpose of feeding lamb-only diet due to allergies, stomach or skin sensitivity.

There are other alternative sources of protein for chihuahua dog nutrition that bring excellent health benefits, such as venison, herring, salmon, duck. They can be found in any good pet specialty store.
